Spain Publishes 2011 Tax Refund Figures

According to the Spanish finance ministry, more than 14.3m individual income tax (IRPF) filers had received income tax refunds by the end of 2012 for the 2011 tax year, corresponding to 95.1% of the total number of requests for refunds (just over 15m).
Spain’s tax agency has so far reimbursed to taxpayers over EUR10.1bn (USD13.3bn), amounting to 90.4% of the total refund claimed, the ministry added, noting that this figure is down –3% compared to the 2010 IRPF tax year when EUR10.4bn was returned.
The finance ministry announced that during the 2011 IRPF tax year, more than 19.5m declarations were filed, up 1% from 2010, of which 10.7m (55%) were submitted online, marking a 20% increase from the previous tax year.
Concluding, the finance ministry emphasizes that the significant increase in the number of declarations submitted online is due to changes made to the tax agency’s website last year, aimed at facilitating online access to the government’s RENO system. The RENO service is an express service allowing users to obtain pre-completed returns and tax data certificates in real time, without a digital certificate and without having to wait for postal delivery.
Concluding, the finance ministry explains that 12.6m taxpayers used the RENO service in the 2011 tax campaign, marking an increase of 92.4% compared with the previous tax year.
In the 2011 IRPF tax year, there was also the obligation for taxpayers to file a wealth tax return for individuals with assets in excess of EUR2m.
